Chamois leather is one of the leather products that its demand is increasing. Chamois leather has especial properties, i.e. has low specific gravity, high water absorption, soft, and comfortable in its uses. It is used to filter high-quality gasoline; as raw material for garment and gloves industries; to clean optical instruments, spectacles and jewelry; to clean and dry windows, motor vehicles bodies, and household appliances. Nowadays, chamois leather is produced using fish oil, which faces some problems, i.e. odour and colour generated by the residue of the fish oil sticking to chamois leather as well as a threat to the preservation of fish and other fish oil utilizations, such as for food and farmacy. The other problem is the production process are time consuming, so it is inefficient. On the other hand, Indonesia has large rubber plantations producing rubber seeds as by-products containing high oil content and have not been optimally utilized as well as potential to be used in the production of chamois leather. The objectives of this study were to obtain an environmentally friendly tanning agent and to obtain oxidizing agent to accelerate the oxidation process in the chamois leather production. The research was conducted by examining the substitution of fish oil with rubber seed oil, finding oxidizing agents and technologies to use the agents to accelerate chamois leather production. This research shows that rubber seed oil successfully replaced fish oil and the use of an oxidizing agent has been successful in reducing the oxidation time from nine days to two days. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to improve the quality and efficiency of chamois leather production process.
