Abstract


Abiotic oxidation of conventional polyolefin can be accelerated by a prodegradant in the presence of ultra-violet (UV) light or heat. Nowadays widely used prodegradant is the stearic with transition metals such as Mn, Co, Fe, etc. In the presence of UV light or heat, prodegradant decompose to carboxylic acid radicals and stimulate the formation of polymer radicals to produce hydroperoxide. On the other hand, transition metal ions can reduce and oxidize hydroperoxide to alkoxy radicals and peroxide radicals, respectively. Alkoxy radicals lead to chain scission to be carbonyl groups and new polymer radicals which then also goes into the cycle of reactions. The reactions ongoing continuously so that molecular weight of the polymer decreases gradually until it can be assimilated by the microorganism and run into biodegradation mechanism.
