PERKEMBANGAN DAN EVALUASI TERJADINYA DEGRADASI PADA PLASTIK OXO-DEGRADABEL

Abstract


Research on biodegradable plastics in developed countries has applied in plastic industries. However, since the price is generally still much higher than that of conventional plastics, the production is limited for special applications. On the other hand, in recent decades research on oxo-degradable plastic has been growing rapidly. In the presence of ultra-violet or heat, addition of prodegradant to conventional polyolefins accelerate oxidation on the polymer chains. Furthermore, degraded polymer chains can be bioassimilated by naturally-occuring microorganism as a carbon source for the metabolism. Commonly used prodegradants are salt from stearic with transition-metals such as Co, Cu, Mn, etc. This paper discusses the studies of oxo-degradable plastics, as well as prodegradants and its influence on the molecular weight reduction, carbonyl index, mineralization, loss of mechanical properties and damage on plastic surfaces, pointing that the degradation was carried out on the polyolefins. Imported additive has been used in several industrial plastic packaging bags in Indonesia.
