STUDY OF DETERMINATION OF FREE FORMALDEHYDE IN LEATHER PRODUCTS AND LEATHER ARTICLES AS SUPPORT FOR IMPLEMENTATION ECOLABEL

Abstract


The objective is to review the readiness of the testing laboratories in the determination of free formaldehyde in the products of finished leather and leather articles in order to support industry to applicate ecolabel. Formaldehyde is one of the tanner ingredient that is widely used in the leather tanning industry because it provides resistance properties to washing, hydrophilic, resistant to boiling water, resistant to sunlight, smooth and has a flat white color so when done coloring gives bright colors . Formaldehyde is a hazardous material that is restricted in its use so that the products of finished leather and leather goods included in any of the parameters ecolabel. Determination of free formaldehyde levels in the products of finished leather and leather articles can be carried out in a laboratory test method ISO / TS 17226:2003. While SNI for determination of free formaldehyde in the finished leather and leather goods are not yet available.
